Vitamins, Minerals, and Omega-3 Fat Acids
Fish is an important part of healthy nutrition. It is a source of protein which helps the body to form new cells. Fish contains many vitamins. Vitamins A, D, and E are only the ones better known from the long list.
Our bodies need vitamin D to help calcium that we receive from food, to be transported into our bones.
Iodine and selenium represent other important components of fish products. Human body needs iodine for its thyroid gland to function well, while selenium as a natural antioxidant protects cells from free radicals and provide support to the immune system.
Fish is also a rich source of zinc and magnesium. Zinc is involved in the circulation of oxygen throughout the body, while magnesium is vital for the proper functioning of the nerve and muscle cells.
Fish, especially, the fat fish species, contain Omega-3 fat acids or special polyunsaturated fat acids found mostly in fish but contained also in some vegetable foods, such as nuts, rape, and linen.
Omega-3 fat acids are critically important for life. Human body cannot produce them on its own and therefore needs them to be supplied with food. Omega-3 acids are wholesome for blood pressure and has anti-inflammatory effect, they support the immune system and help avoiding cardiovascular diseases.
